CUSTOM RIDES: 4WD TRUCKIN’ COMPANY’S 33-INCH FORTUNER

For many years, the Toyota Fortuner has dominated the South African SUV segment, holding rank as one of our country’s most popular selling vehicles. The secret to the Fortuner’s success lies in its well-balanced package of versatility and renowned reliability; but it’s also a damn good off-roader, and a vehicle we’re constantly working with and developing new products for. That’s why we’ve dubbed it Mr Popular.

As its owners will testify, the Fortuner has very few weaknesses; however, much like any stock-standard 4x4, it can do with a few extra inches of ground clearance. The obvious solution to this problem is to fit an aftermarket suspension system.

We install a wide range of suspension kits (and brands), but in the case of our own Fortuner, we opted for the Ironman system. We chose the medium-duty pack, which offers great improvements to the Fortuner’s ride comfort, ground clearance, and loadability. However, it also enhances the vehicle’s general off-road performance.

Many clients request an aftermarket steel bull-bar, but we wanted to create something unique by installing a winch plate behind the Fortuner’s stock bumper. The benefit of such a setup is that it cuts back on the vehicle’s front-end weight, and if you’re on a budget, it saves on the overall cost of modifying a Fortuner.

While the Ironman kit does a great job at increasing the vehicle’s undercarriage ground clearance (by approximately 50mm), unfortunately, like all suspension upgrades, it can’t increase the clearance under the Fortuner’s rear diff and lower suspension arms. In this case, the only way to increase the vehicle’s lowest-point is to fit taller tyres. We opted for a set of 33-inch Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tyres: a well-rounded tyre-size increase that does little to affect the Fortuner’s day-to-day driving performance, but adds an extra 25mm under the rear diff and lower suspension arms. It also improves the Fortuner’s off-road traction, wading depth, flotation on sand, puncture resistance, pothole performance, and the approach, ramp and departure angles.

Of course, in order to get those 33-inch tyres to fit, we modify the Fortuner’s fenders and install custom-made wheel arches. When we’re done, the vehicle stands taller and wider, but (what’s more important) it also looks factory spec − the modifications are moulded accurately, colour-coded exactly, and made so that the tyres fit inside the wheel arches to the same proportions as the OE model.

We finished this conversion with our very own 4WDTC roof rack, Front Runner drawer system, Front Runner 42-litre long-range fuel tank, two 52W Extreme Light spots, a 9500 lbs Ironman winch, and much, much more. (See specification panel)
