FORD RANGER RAPTOR
35-INCH FORD RANGER RAPTOR
When the first Raptor kit hit the market we were amazed that such a simple and inexpensive modification could have such a big impact on a vehicle’s looks. We retail the kit for about R11 250 and that price gets you a completely revised front grille, a wicked looking bonnet scoop, and one badass looking Ford Ranger.
But, like a tray of hot cakes, these kits have sold faster than you can say the words, “knock- off”, and now the so-called Raptor-look is about as common as a white Corolla with ‘My Family’ stickers on the back.
Pity, because we’d just bought a Ranger as a company car and were less than enthused about the same old Ford Ranger Raptor kit, so we added a few extras. Well, actually… a lot.
We’ve always thought the Raptor kit adds a certain rally look to the Ford Ranger, and, to continue with this trend, we built a fastback frame that could house the spare wheel at the back, but also lift out of the way when access was needed to the vehicle’s load-bay area. We’ve built similar frames in the past, but these had replaced the vehicle’s entire load box – almost like a flatbed. In contrast, we wanted to keep this bakkie as practical as possible, so we built the frame with heavy-duty steel pipe, and bent it to shape. The entire frame is hinged at the back and lifted using gas struts.
It’s also lockable when latched in place, so it prevents access to the rest of the load bay area. The frame includes mounting points for easy-access equipment, such as a spade, high-lift jack, and/or axe. We finished the Ranger’s rear with a 4WDTC bumper and tow hitch, and moved our focus to the front.
In keeping with the rally look, we opted to keep the OE front bumper; however, we added a twist by installing a winch behind the unit. We also modified the Raptor kit and integrated a 12-bulb Hella LED light bar into the bonnet scoop. This light faces downwards and can be used as an everyday driving light without affecting oncoming vehicles. The front-end was completed with two long range Hella Luminator LED lights mounted to the nudge bar; and then we moved on to the big stuff…
A medium-duty Iron Man suspension kit was installed for better ground clearance, comfort, off-road traction, and load-ability. We then turned our attention to wheels and tyres and went for the best possible mix of on-road drivability, and off-road capability, choosing a set of 35-inch Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tyres for the job. A set of custom-made 4WDTC wheel arches gave the tyres space to flex, and custom 20-inch rims provided the correct offset for the oversized tyres to fit, and to proportionately increase the Ranger’s track width. The result is a vehicle with minimal body roll, maximum ground clearance, and un-compromised drivability.
For a final touch of flare, we rejigged the Ranger’s exhaust system so that two (functioning) exhaust pipes exited the vehicle’s load bin (just behind the cab), and then installed a RaceChip system for an extra 25 kW of power. Other accessories and modifications include: an Iron Man snorkel, Takla Cantec seat covers, an Excell long-range fuel tank, and a built-in Engel fridge. (See specification list).
